The United States is beginning to distance itself from its former friends and commercial allies, as well as from its shared cultural and human values, such as democracy. Instead of investing in the defense umbrella that the EU, the United Kingdom, and Norway are building "at full speed," Spain is dragging its feet (due to constant internal conflict within the coalition government) and is assuming the role of China's number one partner and friend .

In its document, the EU White Paper on Defense places China as a threat to EU security. This is partly due to its aspirations and established position as a military power, but also because it is an authoritarian state and society, with no semblance to and little respect for European values. Its ambiguous neutrality in the Ukraine War and its choice to support Putin also don't help.

The Spanish Prime Minister announced this week that he is preparing his third trip to visit Chinese President Xi Jinping, the third time in three years. A European record. He has also instructed the Spanish Royal Family to prepare a state visit to China in November.

All of this, apparently, is intended to attract more money and more Chinese investment in Spain, and to ensure that Spanish companies have priority in the Chinese market. Spain currently has a huge trade deficit with China.

Pedro Sánchez recently changed his vote from a "yes" to tariffs on Chinese electric cars in the EU to abstaining from voting. The Chinese ambassador to Spain announced that, in gratitude, China will invest €10 billion in Spain.
