The garbage, the sewage, the refuse of our personal and the industrial life... it does not smell good, takes up space, attracts the rats, a breeding ground for bugs, bacteries and illnesses...

So it is definately not the most sexy, or the first to think of when we hear the words smart or intelligent cities.

Like most people, the first that comes to mind would be all those services that the city would provide in order to make lives a bit more comfortable and easy to live. Maybe you will bear in mind the public transportation systems, mobility at large, car-sharing solurions, tourism services, emergency warning systems, and all those elements that offer improvement in citizen comfort and safety.

The United Nations projects 66% of the world´s population will live in cities by 2050. And these mega metropolis pose mega-solutions on infrastructure and services in particular. Imagine only that the modern lifestyle around the globe produces much more waste per citizen than only a decade ago. So the management of the things set together in a system become increasingly important. Take note if you haven't already, since long some buzz-words are IoT, Internet of Things. And this kind of connectivity on-line or real-time between objects is in fact already present in refuse collection and refuse treatment solutions found in our smart kind of cities. And this happens in spite of you not seeing it directly. Cities need the sophisticated and efficient tools to manage waste, monitor bins with sensors, and optimize capacity and collection routes.

There are already technology and production available that provides a certain control on whether the user has the permit or not to use a specific container or not, how much, what kind and how frequent this citizen throws garbage into a garbage container near his home. The trucks that collects the waste can get their daily routes set-up to empty only those containers that are full enough to require collection. And the reduced number of heavy trucks on the street, reduces noise, traffice pollution and make our livelihood even better. In a smart way.
